Beauty and the Mind in the Age of Psychiatry
The Mid-Century Promise of the Mind Sciences
PUBLICLY DOCUMENTED LIVES · COMPARATIVE INTERPRETATION
Three ideals of twentieth-century beauty and three different encounters with the emerging authority of psychiatry.
Biographies, letters, interviews, archives, and accounts from different observers cannot reproduce first-person experience in full. Compared carefully, however, they can reveal constraints, struggles, pursuits, losses, achievements, and adaptive patterns.
These essays interpret publicly available historical and biographical materials. They do not retrospectively diagnose their subjects, and psychological interpretation remains distinct from clinical assessment.
